Buying A Memory Foam Mattress Topper

You may have resigned yourself to never having a memory foam mattress. Sure, you've heard all the claims, about the great nights of sleep, the excellent support, and the way the mattress is supposed to conform to your body's shape and then return to its own shape in the morning. However, the cost of buying a memory mattress may be too much for you. But what if you could buy a mattress topper of memory foam instead? You could experience similar sleeping effects much less expensively.

Before looking at any memory foam mattress toppers or pads, do some research. To begin with, you need to be sure that your own original bed is in good enough shape to accommodate a memory foam mattress pad or topper. Your underlying mattress needs to be of moderate firmness (neither too soft nor too hard) and above all it must be very flat, with no dips in it and no "hammock" in the center. This is important because of the properties inherent in the visco memory foam of the topper itself.

Memory foam is made of millions of little cells that change shape as your body heat softens them, allowing them to contour themselves to your own shape. But this heat only extends down about 3 inches in a regular memory foam bed. Beneath that, the foam remains cool and retains both its shape and firmness. This provides uniform support. But it's also why your own mattress needs to be firm and flat, before the mattress topper goes on. It also means that you'll need a topper of between 3 and 5 inches in thickness, though going as high as 5 inches will start piling up the cost.

Buying a mattress topper of memory foam should allow you to experience most of the benefits of a full bed, provided you take heed of all these important factors. If you've got a flat, firm underlying mattress, combined with a topper of good thickness (not to mention the density, which should be about 5 pounds per cubic foot of mattress), then you should be able to enjoy the gentle contouring of the foam mattress enhancer, along with good underlying support.
